# UbiSwitch: default unmanaged operation and UART temperature/status monitoring

### Does UbiSwitch work as an unmanaged switch by default?

Yes. With its default configuration, UbiSwitch works as an unmanaged switch without needing CLI commands. BloxOSLite also provides management features when you need to configure the switch.

### Does connecting a microcontroller to the UART change how it switches traffic?

No. Simply connecting the UART for debugging or CLI access does not change the switching configuration. What matters is which commands you send.

### Can the UART be used to transmit Ethernet packets?

No. The UART is a management/debug interface, not an Ethernet packet-data interface. It can provide status information, including port-status changes, but Ethernet traffic is carried through the Ethernet interfaces.

### Does reading temperature interfere with existing Ethernet traffic?

No. Reading temperature does not change the switch configuration or interfere with packet forwarding. You can use the CLI for monitoring without changing the normal switching behaviour.

Commands that change configuration are different. For example, disabling a port or changing VLAN settings can affect traffic.
